Event Description
Fall Rally is among the most popular events here at Whitney Key Club, and it's for a good reason. This event is not a volunteering event, but is a full day designated for bonding and good times (which is probably one of the reasons this event is so popular). This event takes place annually, usually around late October to early November, at Six Flags Magic Mountain, and the day generally consists of the following: waking up early, riding a bus for a long time, waiting even longer in rollercoaster lines, eating lunch, attending a spirit session, and having a great time all throughout! While there are many benefits to attending this event, it is not free. The price is somewhere around $50, and it includes park admission and transportation fees. For those who wish to attend this event and are willing to pay the fees, many people will agree to the fact that this event is worth every penny you pay. Though rollercoaster lines can go up to 3 hours, and although you will probably ride only 4 rides, there is a lot of bonding that you can do with your home club while waiting in those lines, and during the spirit sessions, it may surprise you how loud Key Clubbers can get. Overall, the event is definitely one anyone should attend if he or she is willing to pay. Many memories and friendships have been made at this event, and for others, friendships that have already existed changed for the better.

Event Description
HOPE Food Bank is a popular volunteering event among Whitney Key Clubbers and other key clubbers from Oxford Academy and Kennedy High School because volunteers can work in a friendly environment, and this event is very reliable; it occurs every 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month, and it has always been that way. This means that there will always be a HOPE Food Bank on those Saturdays if any key clubber has the chance to and wants to attend. The event takes place at a community church and starts in the morning at 7 a.m. and generally lasts until 10:00 a.m. (sometimes it ends earlier and other times it ends later). Volunteers begin the event by helping set up tables and organize food items so that they can be distributed later on. After everything is set up, volunteers then set up along the food items and communicate with the people that come, and the volunteers help distribute food to those people. A lot of the volunteering work lies within setting up food tables, and distributing that food to the people in need. Volunteers are required to remain on task, but that does not mean they can socialize while working; as long as you're not being rude and making immature decisions, you should not get in any kind of trouble (not that you should be getting trouble since you want to keep Whitney's reputation clean).

Rose Float Decorating

Event Description
The Rose Float Decorating event is popular for mainly two reasons: you get to work on the floats that will be presented in the Rose Parade itself, and this opportunity is limited to a certain amount of people and only occurs annually. After waking up early in the morning, you will be taken to the Phoenix Decorating Company, where you will be given the rules and guidelines. From there, a group of people will be chosen to work on making materials for the floats, while a select group of people are allowed onto the scaffolds to work on the float itself. There is something to keep in mind when working on the scaffolds; you are not protected from falling, and maneuvering around is no easy task. Falling is very possible, and injuries are very likely. If you do plan on working on the float, you can work on the ground level, but if you feel as if you can take on the task, you will be allowed to work higher off the ground. If you are chosen to make materials, you would usually be cutting roses or making other small materials that the people on the scaffolds will be putting onto the float. Whether it's making materials or decorating, you will be forced to be on task. The company will be strict with the volunteers since only a certain amount of attendees are allowed, and these floats will be on national television. This event is not free and usually costs around $20.

Where: Phoenix Decorating Company

District Convention

Event Description
DCON, also known as District Convention, is not a volunteering event, but is well known at Whitney. DCON is a 3 day event where Key Clubbers can learn more about certain things in Key Club or certain tools in general like how to get rid of stress or how to manage time. Key Clubbers from around 3 states: California, Nevada, and Hawaii, come to this convention (these 3 states are a part of District 3 hence the name District Convention). There are many workshops that provide the information, whether it relates to Key Club or not. At DCON, many groups are given a certain amount of freedom. Whitney Key Clubbers have always figured out beforehand who goes where, so that a lot of workshops can be covered, and at least 2 are going with one another. During the first day of DCON, we are allowed to skip one of the workshops in order to find our own dinner. On the days that follow, however, meals will be provided. On top of the workshops, there are general sessions which last from a little under an hour to, at times, more than 3 hours. The first general session is usually meant to welcome everyone attending the convention. The second session is more about Kiwanis: the organization that started Key Club, and the third general session is the one that most are excited for: rewards and talent shows. The third general session is where individuals or groups are recognized for their excellence in service. At DCON 2016, Frances Lee (the president), Iris Xu (the Vice President), and Isabelle Lee (the secretary) all received distinguished awards respectively, which was the highest of honors any executive Key Clubber could receive. Scholarships were also handed out to Key Clubbers, and many general members and cabinet members managed to get Bronze and Silver in the Member Recognition Program. When it came to distinguished school clubs, Whitney was in platinum, the highest of honors. Whitney Key Club was also recognized for raising the most funds for Project Eliminate out of all of the Key Clubs in our district! Note that DCON is not only a paid event, but a very expensive one too. The reason that attendance is not very high each year is because of the cost. The location of the event actually influences the price. DCON is either held at the Anahein Convention Center or the Sacramento Convention Center, and for 2017, the location is set for Anaheim. It tends to cost more when the location is in Sacramento, and the theme for 2017 is: Planting the Seeds for Service. Although DCON is very expensive, it is a rewarding experience, and a lot can be learned and gained from this event.

Division Council Meetings

Event Description
DCMs, also known as Division Council Meetings, are meetings, as the name suggests, that are held once a month, but there is usually a service project or an activity after the meeting itself. Most of the times, the events are related to service, but there are some DCMs like the April, July, and August DCMs that all have an event for fun after the meeting. DCMs are for the most part the same each year (or very similar). January DCM is almost always going to be Conclave. For any board member, this is the only optional DCM (since board members are required to attend all DCMs, and general member attendance is highly encouraged). DCM's are a good opportunity to meet people from the division, and to establish connections with volunteers from other schools. There are some more service oriented DCMs in comparison to the activity oriented ones, but whiatever the DCM is, it is still a good chance to go bee-yond the home club, and receive opportunities that may not be offered at the home club.
tl;dr

Whitney's Lock-In

Event Description
tl;dr
Each year, Whitney Key Club hosts a 12 hour event called Lock In. The event, which is planned by the Treasurer, consists of many different activities and service projects that you can take part of. The event starts early in the morning at 6 am, and it lasts until 6pm. At Lock In, there are also Icebreakers near the beginning of the event so that Whitney Key Clubbers can interact and possibly create new friends. This event is inclusive to Whitney meaning only Whitney Key Clubbers will be attending. Some of the events to expect are PB&J making and poster making. Another event is walking around neighborhoods and collecting canned foods from people around the neighborhood. You will have to "pay" for Lock In, but the money is not used for the club's personal use; the money is donated to an organization in need. Lock In is among the more popular events in Whitney, and because you'll be seeing the same people for 12 hours straight, you can expect to get to know at least one person better, if not more!
What: A 12 hour event with various service projects and some icebreakers.
Where: Whitney High School
16800 Shoemaker Avenue Cerritos, CA 90703
When: around January (before school resumes from winter break)
Price: $20
